The Paleolithic period
The Japanese Paleolithic period is defined as the period without pottery.
The scholarly consensus had been that Japan was uninhabitable before people
with pottery immigrated from the continent. An amateur archaeologist, Tadahiro
Aizawa found stoneware at Iwajyuku and proved the existence of people in Japan during the Paleolithic period.

Tadahiro Aizawa (1926 - 1989) was a natto hawker, and the first person
to discover Japanese Paleolithic artifacts in 1946. The scholarly consensus
had been that Japan was uninhabitable before the Jomon period. Aizawa discovered
stone axes at Iwajuku. He had only an elementary school education. However, he passionately
believed in pre-Jomon habitation and discovered more than 350 archaeological
sites in Japan. |
